CEFR Level A1 – Beginner

A1 is the true beginner level. Learners know very simple words and phrases and can handle basic everyday situations.

What a learner can usually do at A1

  • introduce themselves and other people
  • ask and answer simple questions about personal details
  • understand very simple sentences when people speak slowly
  • use basic phrases for food, directions and daily routines

Example short sentences

Here are a few short German sentences that match the general difficulty of level A1.

  • Ich heiße Anna
  • Ich wohne in Berlin
  • Ich lerne Deutsch
  • Ich trinke Wasser
  • Ich arbeite heute
