CEFR Language Levels – Overview

Understand how the CEFR A1–C2 scale works and how it connects to German, Italian, French and other languages on The Language Channel.

What is CEFR?

CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) is the official international scale used to describe language ability from A1 (beginner) to C2 (near-native).

Schools, universities, employers and exam providers use CEFR levels to define entry requirements, course levels and test results.

  • A-levels (A1–A2): basic user
  • B-levels (B1–B2): independent user
  • C-levels (C1–C2): proficient user

How we use CEFR here

On The Language Channel, sentence lists, exercises, and certificates can be tagged with a CEFR level so learners always know the difficulty.

German A1 – Starter sentences
German B1 – Daily conversation
Italian A2 – Travel basics
French B2 – Study abroad

After you reach a stable level, you can request an official Fluency Certificate based on CEFR to show to schools or employers.
